Artis
What is Artis?
Natura Artis Magistra is about the cohesion of life. Natura stands for nature; Artis stands for the culture through which we define the world around us and Magistra stands for the relationship between nature and culture.
Our mission statement represents the long term purpose for Artis. Artis strives to be a garden of knowledge -- a knowledge garden with animals, with plants, with museums, with historical buildings and a planetarium. Artis is a park through which you can stroll, where you can reflect and where you can experience and encounter the unexpected. Artis collects and displays nature, both living and extinct, attempting to understand and interpret it. People store their interpretations in language, science and values -- in culture. Artis aims to stimulate thoughts on the relationship between nature and culture. Artis is about the cohesion of life.
What does Artis do?
Four strategic objectives are derived from the mission:
- Fulfilling a social role in the community, through education about the relationship between man and nature;
- Protecting and maintaining endangered species of animals and plants;
- Acting as a partner and a forum for organisations and institutions with similar goals
- Safeguarding our heritage, both regarding landscape and architecture
Why is Artis a member of IUCN?
Artis is a member of IUCN because together we carry out the value of nature. IUCN brings together the knowledge and commitment of many governments and nature conservation organisations on a national and international level. In Artis nature can be experienced live. 1,2 million people are reached in Artis every year. The IUCN Red List is a suitable instrument to inform our visitors about threatened species.
