What is CML?

CML (Institute for environmental sciences) is part of the University of Leiden and does research on and teaches on “industrial ecology” en “conservation biology”.

What does CML do?

  • Contribution to environmental theory and methodology development on “industrial ecology” en “conservation biology”;
  • Field research in Western and non-Western countries;
  • Interdisciplinary research on the following themes:substances and products, from the cradle to the grave (Department "Industrial Ecology"); “impact of landuse on biodiversity, sustainable use and   preservation of biodiversity and invasive species (Department "Conservation Biology");
  • BSc, MSc and PhD educational programmes.
Why is CML a member of IUCN?
CML and IUCN have a long history. One of the first presidents of IUCN, Prof Donald Kuenen, was also one of the directors of CML. Hans de Iongh from CML was chairman of the board from 1990 until 2000. Hans is still active for IUCN International, as a Regional Councillor. Former CML director Prof Helias Udo de Haes has been a board member of IUCN NL since 2006.

The main motivation for CML to be part of IUCN is that it is the largest science driven global conservation organisation with a large impact on policy and management of the conservation of biodiversity. CML contributes with her scientific programme and thus feels connected to the global IUCN network.
