What is UvA-IBED?
The Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics (IBED) is a research institute of the Faculty of Science (FNWI) of the University of Amsterdam (UvA).

What does IBED do?
Within IBED biologists, earth scientist and environmental chemists together perform scientific research of the origin and preservation of biodiversity and the functioning of ecosystems. In addition, the scientists of IBED are involved in the educational programmes of the UvA.

We do fundamental as well as applied research. Our fundamental research is mainly aimed at investigating the dynamics of biodiversity in space and time, the hierarchy of abiotic ecosystem processes and the dynamics of ecosystems. An example is a study of the predictability of the functioning of marine food webs. Our applied research is aimed amongst others at sustainability, management of biodiversity (both temperate and tropical), protection and regeneration of ecosystems and ecotoxicology. An example is the development of a sustainable method to combat algal blooms in swimming water.

With respect to education, we are involved in the BSc and MSc programmes that cover aspects of the earth sciences, biology and (environmental) chemistry. In addition, we train PhD students. Because the great issues of our time transcend beyond the traditional individual academic disciplines, we use a thematic, transdisciplinary approach as much as possible within our research and educational programmes.
