Mission and Strategy

Mission of IUCN
IUCN, The World Conservation Union, aims at protecting the integrity and diversity of nature all over the world and encouraging the conservation of natural resources and the ecological and social sustainability of its every use.

Mission of IUCN NL
IUCN NL aims at contributing from its specific Dutch situation and context to the conservation and sustainable management of nature and natural resources in an international perspective, based on the views, mission and policy of IUCN (or The World Conservation Union), as well as the results and policy recommendations from the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (2005) of the United Nations. It fills a unique niche in the Dutch social field.

Strategy plan of IUCN NL 2006-2010
The strategy plan 2006-2010 is decisive for the work programme in collaboration with its members, its partners and IUCN International. It has been set up in consultation with the Board and the Supervisory Committee (Dutch IUCN members) and adheres to the IUCN Global Programme.

The strategy plan 2006-2010 has four main objectives:

  • Propagating the IUCN mission in the Netherlands;
  • Reducing the negative effects of Dutch and European activity on ecosystems and biodiversity elsewhere by means of cooperation, advice and analysis;
  • Supporting biodiversity conservation and sustainable ecosystem management by strengthening the organization’s own funding programmes;
  • Supporting and stimulating new innovative finance mechanisms for sustainable ecosystem management world-wide.

Actors / target groups
IUCN NL focuses on three actors / target groups:

  • Dutch government;
  • Dutch business;
  • Civil Society Organisations (in the Netherlands and developing countries).

Articles of association
The articles of association of IUCN NL were amended in 2005. Today the IUCN members hold a seat on the Supervisory Committee.

Strategy of IUCN NL for 2001-2006
The Committee has developed a strategy that is geared to the work plan of IUCN International, the Dutch government and the activities of the Dutch IUCN member organizations. This strategy is based on three principles:

1. Propagating the IUCN mission to the member organizations, policy makers, civil society organisations and business in the Netherlands by strengthening and expanding the IUCN network, through cooperation with the members;

2 Further developing co-funding activities in the form of fund management (small grants), with which local nature conservation projects are financed abroad through an ecoregional and/or ecosystemic approach.
