Fighting pollution and cleaning up the zone of the bay Lévrier de Noudhibou

The second largest city in Mauretania – Nouadhibou – is located near a number of important coastal wetland areas. To the north of the city lies the “la Baie de l’Etoile which presently is being threatened by the expansion of the city notably through uncontrolled infrastructural developments. Other problems are pollution from the big sea harbour, overfishing and other types of unsustainable use of the wetland resources. APEAH will execute a component – the project - of a larger program for the conservation of the site executed by IUCN Mauretania. The activities of APEAH will concentrate on general awareness raising concerning the issues at stake in and around the Bay; develop a number of specific environmental education activities for primary and secondary schools in the area and facilitate – in close collaboration with IUCN Mauretania – stakeholders dialogues. The aim of the overall program is to arrive at a sustainable management plan for the area in which al concerned parties do participate.

Millennium Development Goals
