Seminar on Responsible Soy - 19 March 2008

CONCLUSIONS

On 19 March the first European Seminar on Responsible Soy took place. The event was organized by IUCN, the International Union for Conservation of Nature, FEFAC, the European Feed Manufacturers Federation, and FEDIOL, the EU Oil and Protein meal Industry. This cooperation in itself was unique as it was the first time that at European level industry and civil society representatives joined hands to organize a seminar on achieving mainstream sustainable soy production.

The event was a big success and attended by about eighty participants from the European food and feed industry, civil society organizations and governmental bodies.

During the event it became apparent that there is a need for responsible soy production to counter negative effects like large scale deforestation, erosion and civil rights abuse. First movers and the Round Table on Responsible Soy present businesses the opportunity to work towards responsible soy, with the help of IUCN NL.
