Facing the climate change
The proposal aims to promote the alternative of payment for oil as a reserve in the subsoil (crudo represado). This could be a feasible and efficient alternative to face the problem of Global Warming. In the Yasuní case, a Natural Reserve in Ecuador with high Biodiversity, the government in Ecuador is evaluating the alternative of keeping the oil “in situ” and to commit itself to keep it underground indefinitely. The national government would be compensated by the national and the international community selling government bonds. The instrument to promote this example will be a promotional publication in English and Spanish, for distribution at the “United Nations Climate Change Conference” in Bali COP13, but also for distribution within South America. As an output of the project, 1000 copies will be distributed at Bali and 1000 in South America. The publication will describe the situation of oil in Ecuador using this particular example with the TEXACO threat to the Yasuní reserve, as an area relevant for global biodiversity. Although the representatives from Ecuador have plans to present the alternative in this international forum, Oilwatch wants to stress the message even more by this publication with concrete examples of its potential.
