Formulating a Comprehensive Solution of the Problems Related Ex-Logging Concession Area Kerinci Seblat National
This proposal is built on the success of LTBs IUCN NL supported project “Partnerships in conservation: collaborative forest and nature protection and conservation in Merangin district, Jambi, Sumatra, Indonesia. Project ID LTB 100253” which has helped mitigate the problems of forest clearing and encroachment by 6,000 inmigrants from neighbouring provinces into the ex-logging areas bordering Kerinci Seblat National Park. These are very rich and important forests which among other provide home for Sumatran Tiger and Rhinoceros. LTB developed a collaborative patrol system with members from the community, district forestry service, and Kerinci Seblat National Park Authority, which has built a sense of ownership among forest peoples, awareness of forest functions, a sense of responsibility for conserving forest, and provided a “shock therapy” against illegal logging and forest clearing. Now with the changing of the District Head regime which brings into being a new supportive political climate, LTB is proposing a project entitled “Formulating a Comprehensive Solution of the Problems Related to Encroachment of Ex-Logging Concessions Bordering Kerinci Seblat National Park, Merangin District, Jambi, Sumatera, Indonesia. This will target and stop encroachment, creating enablling conditions for strong and sustainable forest management systems, strengthen working relationships between District and provincial forestry services, the National Park, and community leaders, developing a clear legal status for the former logging forests, support establishment of Customary Forests, and conduct assessment of the social and environmental situation to form basis of subsequent actions to prevent forest loss on the scale that has previously occurred in Merangin district.
