Dutch Postcode Lottery helps improve safety of environmental defenders

27 January 2016

At the annual Dutch Postcode Lottery Gala, IUCN NL received a special donation of 2.180.000 EUR for its project ‘Defending environmental defenders’. This project will improve the safety of environmental defenders who are facing threats and violence in Colombia, Peru, DR Congo, Indonesia and The Philippines. The project is a joint initiative of IUCN NL, Milieudefensie, Friends of the Earth International and Global Witness.

Each week, at least two people are being killed for taking a stand against environmental destruction. Many more are facing threats, intimidations and violence, sometimes on a daily basis. “Thanks to the support of the Dutch Postcode Lottery, we can now take action to signal, prevent and penalize violence, and to provide shelter to innocent victims”, says Gemma Span (IUCN NL).

Annual grant

In the presence of guest of honor George Clooney, the Dutch Postcode Lottery awarded a total of 328 million euros to charities. On top of the special donation, IUCN NL also received its annual grant of 900.000 euros. During the past 15 years this financial support has enabled IUCN NL to safeguard more than 32.000 hectares of natural forests.
