{"id":19640,"date":"2019-07-02T10:55:00","date_gmt":"2019-07-02T09:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.iucn.nl\/?p=19640"},"modified":"2021-12-03T16:52:56","modified_gmt":"2021-12-03T15:52:56","slug":"partner-organization-in-benin-wins-equator-prize","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.iucn.nl\/en\/news\/partner-organization-in-benin-wins-equator-prize\/","title":{"rendered":"Partner organization in Benin wins Equator Prize"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>I<\/strong>UCN NL partner organization Centre R\u00e9gional de Recherche et d\u2019Education pour un D\u00e9veloppement Int\u00e9gr\u00e9 (CREDI) is one of the winners of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.equatorinitiative.org\/2019\/06\/02\/ep-2019-meet-the-winners\/\">Equator Prize 2019<\/a>, which honors community initiatives that advance solutions for climate change and strengthen communal life.<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<p class=\"has-cyan-bluish-gray-color has-text-color\"><em>Header photo: Sitatunga (c) CREDI<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<p>CREDI received the prize for their creation of an agroecological farm and a 67,000-hectare Community Natural Park. \u201cTheir work harmonizes local communities with nature and puts youth at the center of climate mitigation,\u201d says Jan Kamstra of IUCN NL. \u201cTheir work centers around the set up and management by local communities of the &#8220;Sitatunga Valley&#8221; nature reserve, an area in Southern Benin that is rich in biodiversity.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<p>The Sitatunga is a threatened species of &#8216;swamp&#8217; antelope. \u201cThe reserve has been the first in Benin to be formally recognized as a Community Based Protected Area,\u201d Kamstra states. IUCN NL has been supporting CREDI since 2007.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<p>The Equator prize honors 22 community initiatives that advance solutions for climate change and strengthen communal life.
