However, is there truly cause for celebration? Regional data reveal that in provinces with relatively abundant forest cover remaining, deforestation rates are in fact rising: the frontier of deforestation is moving east to Sulawesi, Maluku and Tanah Papua.<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:12px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Food estates in Papua<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<p>For instance, in Tanah Papua &#8211; located on the island of New Guinea which holds the world&#8217;s third largest and most biodiverse rainforest<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_201369_1('footnote_plugin_reference_201369_1_3');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_201369_1('footnote_plugin_reference_201369_1_3');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_201369_1_3\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[3]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_201369_1_3\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-020-2549-5#:~:text=Home%20to%20some%20of%20the%20best-preserved%20ecosystems%20on%20the%20planet\">New Guinea has the world\u2019s richest island flora | Nature<\/a><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_201369_1_3').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_201369_1_3', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top center', relative: true, offset: [-7, 0], });<\/script> &#8211; significant threats loom. Just a week before the WRI event,&nbsp; Mongabay reported on the \u2018<em>World\u2019s biggest deforestation project\u2019 <\/em>&nbsp;underway in Papua, aimed at clearing 2 million hectares of forests wetlands and grasslands in Merauke district<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_201369_1('footnote_plugin_reference_201369_1_4');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_201369_1('footnote_plugin_reference_201369_1_4');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_201369_1_4\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[4]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_201369_1_4\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\"><a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2024\/09\/worlds-biggest-deforestation-project-gets-underway-in-papua-for-sugarcane\/\">World\u2019s biggest deforestation project gets underway in Papua for sugarcane (mongabay.com)<\/a><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_201369_1_4').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_201369_1_4', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top center', relative: true, offset: [-7, 0], });<\/script>. This new project follows earlier development plans in the region, such as the Merauke Integrated Food and Energy Estate (MIFEE), initiated in 2011. MIFEE was justified by claims that it would contribute to national food security through the production of rice and sugarcane. The forests not only serve as a source of sustenance but also as the foundation of their cultural and spiritual identity. Such narratives, claiming to develop the territory and to civilize the people, were used to justify the Dutch colonisation. 60 years later,&nbsp; it is no longer the Netherlands but Indonesia who enforces its model of development, victimising both people and nature.
