NOC*NSF has joined the international Sports for Nature Framework, a global initiative launched by the International Olympic Committee, the United Nations and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). By signing up, NOC*NSF is committing itself to protecting, conserving and restoring nature.<\/p>\n<\/div>

\n

This is essential, because sport cannot thrive without a healthy environment. The consequences of climate change and the deterioration of the natural environment are already being felt. Extreme heat poses health risks and leads to cancellations, flooding renders sports grounds temporarily unplayable, and the loss of biodiversity undermines the quality and appeal of sporting environments.<\/p>\n<\/div>

\u201cSport needs nature, but we don\u2019t have enough of it. We recognise our impact and take responsibility for conserving, restoring and protecting nature,\u201d says Marc van den Tweel, Chief Executive of NOC*NSF.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Sport cannot exist without nature<\/h2>\n<\/div>

For many sports enthusiasts, nature is literally their playing field. Think of runners, cyclists, walkers, horse riders, water sports enthusiasts and outdoor sports enthusiasts who make use of forests, dunes, heathland, parks, beaches and water. But sports parks and sports facilities also benefit from more green spaces. Trees, plants and healthy soil provide cooling, better water retention and a more pleasant sporting environment.<\/p>\n<\/div>

At the same time, sport itself also has an impact on the natural environment. Athletes use space, events attract visitors, and sports facilities require energy, water, materials and maintenance. NOC*NSF recognises this impact and wishes to work with the sports sector to develop solutions that reduce the strain on the natural environment and increase its positive contribution.In the coming years, NOC*NSF will therefore focus on three key areas: greener sports grounds, responsible outdoor sports and new partnerships for nature restoration. To this end, the umbrella organisation is collaborating with, amongst others, sports federations, local authorities, nature organisations and site managers.<\/p>\n<\/div>

\u201cThe framework provided by Sports for Nature goes beyond simply preventing damage to nature. It enables us to identify risks, restore nature and share valuable lessons across the entire sector and beyond. IUCN NL not only assists with the necessary knowledge transfer, but we also closely monitor the sector\u2019s progress. That is precisely why we welcome this step by NOC*NSF and look forward to a fruitful collaboration in the coming years,\u201d said Liliana J\u00e1uregui, director of IUCN NL.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Working together towards a nature-inclusive sports sector<\/h2>\n<\/div>

The international framework provides guidance, but the details are worked out in the Netherlands. This is in line with existing programmes such as the Outdoor Sport Agenda, the Roadmap for Making Sport More Sustainable and the commitment to sustainable sporting events.NOC*NSF has no direct control over this. Sports grounds are often owned by local authorities and clubs, whilst nature reserves are managed by site managers. That is why NOC*NSF has chosen primarily to play a unifying, guiding role: bringing parties together, sharing good examples, helping the sports sector to take steps forward and creating the necessary conditions.By joining the Sports for Nature Framework, NOC*NSF is making it clear that nature is not a side issue for sport. A healthy natural environment is essential for continuing to practise sport safely, healthily and enjoyably, both now and in the future.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
