At the same time, wetlands in Europe face systemic degradation driven by drainage, infrastructure development, and climate change. The joint white paper led by IUCN NL, draws on the evidence of several EU-funded initiatives to synthesize policy recommendations for wetland conservation and restoration in Europe.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<p><em><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-cyan-bluish-gray-color\">Headerphoto: Weerribben-Wieden National Park \u00a9 KNEIA<\/mark><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Advancing wetland restoration<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<p>Wetlands provide an opportunity for both the European Union and its Member States to advance large-scale nature restoration in support of climate, water, and biodiversity objectives. The EU policy landscape is placing emphasis on ecosystem restoration.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<p>This white paper draws on findings and experiences from multiple EU-funded projects and wetland types across Europe, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rewet-he.eu\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.rewet-he.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">REWET<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wethorizons.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WET HORIZONS<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/alfawetlands.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ALFAwetlands<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.restore4cs.eu\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.restore4cs.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Restore4Cs<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forpeat.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ForPeat<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/wetland4change.interreg-euro-med.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Interreg Wetland4Change<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/palusdemos.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Palus Demos<\/a>. In the REWET project, funded by the European Union, NGOs, universities, companies and institutions joined forces to study the full potential of wetland areas.
