To limit these negative side-effects and to responsibly source raw materials, IUCN NL believes <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iucn.nl\/en\/opinion\/groene-energie-vaak-gepaard-met-ontbossing-en-schending-mensenrechten\/\" target=\"_blank\">three things are indispensable<\/a>: a) transparency, b) strong local laws and regulations, and c) voluntary and mandatory sustainability standards for companies.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"small-12 large-offset-2 large-8\">\n    <div class=\"picture-content grid-x block\" id=\"block_61b08031c4521\">\n        <span class=\"anchor-id\" id=\"\" ><\/span>\n                                    <div class=\"cell small-12 medium-6 large-6 picture-content__image lazyload\" style=\"background-image:inherit;\" data-bg-image=\"url(&#039;https:\/\/www.iucn.nl\/app\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Mining-in-the-Philippines_c-Erwin-Mascarinas_NTFP-EP-Philippines_IUCN-NL_mobile-edited.jpg&#039;)\">\n            \n                <img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.iucn.nl\/app\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Mining-in-the-Philippines_c-Erwin-Mascarinas_NTFP-EP-Philippines_IUCN-NL_mobile-edited-380x300-c-default.jpg\" alt=\"\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 380px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 380\/300;\">\n                <\/div>\n            \n            <div class=\"cell small-12 medium-6 large-6 picture-content__in\"> \n                <div class=\"picture-content__in--header\"><h2>Our work<\/h2><\/div>\n                <div class=\"picture-content__in--text\"><p>IUCN NL is committed to responsible raw materials management to minimise the loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services and to achieve a sustainable energy transition.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n                                <div class=\"picture-content__in--link\">\n                    <a class=\"button button--primary\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iucn.nl\/en\/our-work\/value-chains\/responsible-mining\/\"\n                        target=\"\">Read more \n                    <\/a>\n                <\/div>\n                            <\/div>\n\n                        <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Standards impose stricter requirements<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<p>\u2018Voluntary performance standards to which mining companies can commit are an important addition to existing laws and regulations,\u2019 Van der Wal says, \u2018because these sector-wide standards often impose stricter sustainability requirements.\u2019 &nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<p>IUCN NL therefore <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iucn.nl\/en\/opinion\/how-to-stimulate-mining-in-a-responsible-and-transparent-manner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">encourages companies to publicly commit to such standards<\/a>, especially the progressive <a href=\"https:\/\/responsiblemining.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IRMA standard<\/a> (Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<p>\u2018This standard was developed by a multi-sector coalition consisting of mining companies, purchasing companies (such as jewelers and electronics manufacturers), NGOs, labour unions and mining affected communities,\u2019 Van der Wal explains. \u2018Also IUCN NL and its partner organizations that are committed to the protection of vulnerable ecosystems have actively provided input during the consultation rounds.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Good interpretation of responsible mining<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<p>\u2018The IRMA standard is a demanding standard. Even our highly critical CSO partners see this standard as a good interpretation of what responsible mining is, taking into account communities, employees and natural resources,\u2019 Van der Wal says. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Important step towards wider uptake<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<p>Governments, policymakers and financial institutions can use their influence to promote certification. \u2018The encouragement by the European Parliament is an important step towards a wider uptake of the IRMA standard,\u2019 Van der Wal says.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"posts
