During her biology studies she started to research jaguars: the beginning of a life-long devotion to protect this threatened species. Today, Mar\u00eda Fernanda leads Proyecto Sebraba, the Venezuelan partner of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iucn.nl\/en\/project\/operation-jaguar\/\">Operation Jaguar<\/a>.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<p>When she started her studies, Mar\u00eda Fernanda was not particularly interested in jaguars: \u2018I was passionate about all wildlife: sea turtles, sharks, birds&#8230; It did not matter.\u2019 This changed when she started to study the diet of jaguars living in western Venezuela. \u2018We discovered that their diet depends on endemic species, such as an endangered Maracaibo wood turtle (<em>Rhinoclemmys diademata<\/em>). It made me realise how deeply connected jaguars are with their environment. From that moment on, I was hooked to this species.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Working with local communities<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<p>The team of Proyecto Sebraba <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iucn.nl\/en\/blog\/jaguar-conservation-brought-to-the-attention-of-a-broad-public-in-venezuela\/\">works closely with the local communities<\/a>. This includes explaining people how important it is to protect jaguars. \u2018Many people see these animals as a threat, to themselves and to their livestock. False information about jaguars attacking people has been shared throughout the country. We show to them that this is not true.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<p>Unfortunately, jaguars sometimes do kill livestock. \u2018But,\u2019 says Mar\u00eda Fernanda, \u2018killing a jaguar will not help to protect farm animals in the long run. It is a territorial species, meaning another animal will take its place sooner or later.\u2019 Proyecto Sebraba informs farmers about the species and helps them to make their property jaguar proof.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<p>Working with jaguars \u2013 and the people co-existing with them \u2013 for fifteen years, has given Mar\u00eda Fernanda valuable insights. \u2018The more people know about a species, the more likely they are to protect it. In one of the villages, people now get worried when \u2018their\u2019 female jaguar does not have cubs in the period she is supposed to,\u2019 explains the biologist. \u2018Before we started working there, they wanted to kill her\u2019.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8216;The more people know about a species, the more likely they are to protect it.\u2019<\/p><cite><strong>Mar\u00eda Fernanda Puerto Carrillo, founder of Proyecto Sebraba <\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From poacher to protector<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<p>This also applies to poachers, says Mar\u00eda Fernanda. \u2018We once needed a guide in a certain area, and since they have a lot of knowledge about the species\u2019 behaviour, a poacher from the village accompanied us on a field trip. He was extremely knowledgeable about the behaviour of jaguars and we talked a lot. This man is now protecting the animal he used to hunt.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Protecting a species in a complex reality<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<p>The team of Proyecto Sebraba operates in the complex and often violent reality of Venezuela. The country\u2019s political and economic crisis creates many extra barriers for nature conservation. As a woman Mar<strong>\u00ed<\/strong>a Fernanda faces an additional layer of challenges, but she is unstoppable.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<p>What makes the jaguar unique to her? \u2018It fascinates me that it is a very impressive animal, and mysterious at the same time. Camera trap footage has shown that people and jaguars have spent hours in the same area without the person realising it. They are almost mythical creatures.\u2019 Even to Mar\u00eda Fernanda, the jaguar is still an apparition: she has seen the animal she dedicates her life to only a few times in its natural habitat.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Operation Jaguar<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<p>Jaguar poaching is increasing in South America. Proyecto Sebraba works with IUCN NL to fight jaguar poaching. Part of Operation Jaguar is to train and mobilise local people to protect the species.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<div
