They provide clean water, fertile soil for food and ensure a stable climate. Forests are essential for the livelihoods of local and indigenous communities.\u00a0It is therefore of great importance that forests are preserved. Through its Forested Landscapes for Equity programme, the Green Livelihoods Alliance (GLA) aimed for the sustainable and inclusive governance of forested landscapes.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<p class=\"has-cyan-bluish-gray-color has-text-color\"><em>Headerphoto: (c) IUCN NL<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<p>The Forested Landscape for Equity programme\u2019s ultimate goal was to reduce deforestation and increase respect for the rights of forest-dependent communities. The work of the programme\u2019s partners focused on four key conditions that are required in order to achieve inclusive and sustainable governance of forested landscapes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"background background-preset-primary\" id=\"block_6dc7ebef4e70f5b8f5f6b1a59e14284d\">\n             <div class=\"dark custom-padding-top\">\n    \n\n<div class=\"small-12 large-offset-2 large-8\">\n    <div class=\"picture-content grid-x block\" id=\"block_63d47f2fe81c25a0e15b4d739cfb3edc\">\n        <span class=\"anchor-id\" id=\"\" ><\/span>\n                    \n            <div class=\"cell small-12 medium-6 large-6 picture-content__in\"> \n                <div class=\"picture-content__in--header\"><h2>The four key conditions for inclusive and sustainable forest governance<\/h2><\/div>\n                <div class=\"picture-content__in--text\"><ol>\n<li>Communities have access to and benefit from land and forest resources and are thus more inclined to protect forests and use them sustainably.<\/li>\n<li>Communities have access to decision-making over their land. The governance of forested landscapes can be inclusive and sustainable only if the interests of all stakeholders are taken into account, including the interests of marginalized forest-dependent groups, such as indigenous people, youth and women.<\/li>\n<li>Sustainable practices <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_72725_1('footnote_plugin_reference_72725_1_1');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_72725_1('footnote_plugin_reference_72725_1_1');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_72725_1_1\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[1]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_72725_1_1\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">Examples of sustainable practices that the programme promoted are agroforestry systems, sustainable harvest of Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) and Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES).<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_72725_1_1').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_72725_1_1', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top center', relative: true, offset: [-7, 0], });<\/script> are in place that allow current and future generations to benefit from ecosystem services such as climate resilience, food security, water provisioning and biodiversity.<\/li>\n<li>Global drivers of deforestation and climate change are addressed.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n                            <\/div>\n\n                            <div class=\"cell small-12 medium-6 large-6 picture-content__image lazyload\" style=\"background-image:inherit;\" data-bg-image=\"url(&#039;https:\/\/www.iucn.nl\/app\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Atewa-forest-gla1-scaled.jpg&#039;)\">\n                <img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.iucn.nl\/app\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Atewa-forest-gla1-scaled-380x300-c-default.jpg\" alt=\"\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 380px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 380\/300;\">\n                <\/div>\n                        <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Strengthening capacities<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<p>The Forested Landscapes for Equity programme contributed to strengthening Southern partner organisations&#8217; capacities 1) to generate and use verified evidence, 2) to develop clear and strategic interventions for lobby &amp; advocacy and communication, and 3) to engage with other CSOs and citizen networks, as well as engaging with the public sector to a certain extent.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<p>The programme has also helped to improve understanding and strategies on gender, inclusion and Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs). One example is the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iucn.nl\/en\/news\/women-human-rights-defenders-find-support-and-inspiration-in-resisters-dialogue\/\" target=\"_blank\">ReSisters Dialogue<\/a>, which our partner LILAK organised for women from rural and indigenous communities from different countries. During this event, they discussed the challenges and threats they face in defending their access to natural resources and shared valuable strategies, lessons and insights.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<p>The clearest result of the programme on the level of gender and inclusivity is that (IPLC) women increased their decision-making power at community level and beyond, by engaging in decision-making bodies and taking leadership roles at all levels.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lobby and advocacy success<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<p>At landscape, national and international level, many lobby and advocacy outcomes were achieved. The programme\u2019s partners have been able to influence public opinion and build public pressure effectively. For example, in Bolivia, a country which is severely affected by forest fires, partners were able to put the protection of forests against agro-extractivism on the public agenda. This public awareness and debate has contributed to changes in forest governance, which ultimately contributes to sustainable management. On the Island of Mindanao in the Philippines, for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iucn.nl\/en\/story\/multi-stakeholder-effort-mobilizes-tax-money-for-conservation-and-restoration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a coalition of local civil society organisations mobilized tax funds<\/a> to ensure more sustainable land use management of a river basin.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<p>In all countries as well as at international level, the programme has influenced dozens of policies and practices related to sustainable forest governance, through improved land, forest, biodiversity, energy and agro-commodity laws, for example by <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iucn.nl\/en\/story\/reality-check-prevents-deforestation-on-west-sumatra\/\" target=\"_blank\">increasing the number of social forestry permits in Indonesia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Delaying destructive development projects<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<p>The programme&#8217;s partners contributed to delaying large-scale destructive projects, e.g. mining in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iucn.nl\/en\/story\/from-proponent-to-opponent-this-man-became-part-of-a-civil-movement-to-safeguard-atewa-forest\/\">Atewa forest (Ghana)<\/a> and the building of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iucn.nl\/en\/news\/indigenous-communities-in-the-philippines-defend-their-rights\/\">Kaliwa Dam (Philippines)<\/a>. Although both projects are still threatening the landscape, the delays and increased national and international attention, are important results that should not be underestimated. Partners\u2019 ability to use the media to influence public opinion has played an important role in these achievements.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block block-container small-12 large-offset-1 large-10\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow large-10\">\n<p>The \u2018Forests for Just a Future\u2019 programme (2021-2025) builds on the work and achievements of the Forested Landscapes for Equity programme. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div
