Sustainable management and financing of the Mono Biosphere Reserve in Benin  

The Mono Biosphere Reserve in Benin is an important area for people and nature. Part of the Biosphere Reserve is the Mono Delta, and as a result of the delta’s annual flooding, it is a multi-ecosystem landscape is characterised by rich fishing grounds, a wide diversity of birds, fresh drinking water, and fertile soil for agriculture. The Reserve is also home to extensive mangrove forests. Here, Eco-Benin, IUCN PACO, and IUCN NL work together with communities, companies, and other actors in the landscape on long-term sustainable management and financing of the reserve and the adjoining marine protected area. Strengthening the management of the Beninese side of the Mono Transboundary Reserve is a first step towards preventing the gradual disappearance of habitats and ecosystems in the area.
