What did IUCN NL do in 2024? Read our annual report

In our annual report, we look back at the milestones we achieved in 2024 together with our international partners and Dutch IUCN members through some inspiring stories.

The urgency to halt and reverse biodiversity loss is still growing – but fortunately, the willingness to act is also growing. Despite increasing challenges, 2024 was a year of meaningful progress.

At the global level, 2024 was an important year for biodiversity policy. During the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP16), landmark decisions were taken, including the creation of the Cali Fund – a major step forward in financing biodiversity protection. IUCN NL is proud to have been able to participate in these negotiations as part of the Dutch delegation.

Closer to home, we were delighted to extend our five-year partnership with the National Postcode Lottery, continuing a valuable collaboration that has now spanned 25 years. At the end of the year, we said goodbye to our director, Coenraad Krijger, who has accepted a new position with Wetlands International. We thank Coenraad for his leadership and lasting contributions and look forward to building on the foundation he helped lay.

Meaningful steps for nature conservation

We are proud of the meaningful steps taken in 2024, as presented in this annual report. A few examples:

  • Thanks in part to our work with the Green Livelihoods Alliance, 15 policy changes were made.
  • We funded five new land acquisition projects of local wildlife organisations securing 49,454 hectares of fragile nature. In Ecuador, Khamai Foundation was able to protect a patch of tropical rainforest in one of the most biodiverse areas in the world.
  • Through the Green Livelihoods Alliance, 34 million hectares of forest are now managed sustainably.
  • We funded 72 initiatives by nature organisations in 21 countries, with a total investment of €2,943,615.
  • 550,000 euros was awarded to the BESTLIFE2030 project to protect and restore nature in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
  • Through the CEPF programme, 25 wildlife organisations in Madagascar and the Indian Ocean islands received support to strengthen their conservation efforts.
  • On 22 May, we launched the National Dashboard Biodiversity, in collaboration with SoortenNL, Naturalis Biodiversity Center and Sovon. On the first day, it attracted more than 5,200 visitors
  • Our new fund, the Green Lifeline Action Fund, awarded 22 relief requests from 14 partner organisations.

New initiatives

We also launched new initiatives with new partners. In the Netherlands, we launched two new projects: Basic Quality Nature (BKN) and NL2120, which aims to make the Netherlands more future- and climate-proof while investing in the Netherlands’ green earning potential. NL2120 was awarded the Grand Maaskant Prize in 2024.
